Since coaching is such a broad term, people who hire a coach sometimes question whether or not they’re getting the real deal or if their coach is “doing it right.”
There are three ways to tell if your coach is delivering the most value for the buck.
- The conversation holds the greater vision for your life yet stays in the place of where you are at in the moment.
The coach is helping with your immediate situation while holding the bigger picture in mind. Your coach doesn’t get caught up in believing everything you say … but rather gets curious and asks questions in a way that naturally expands your thinking. - You have a sense of moving forward and letting go of old ideas and beliefs that get you stuck.
Your feel you are making progress. The coach is zeroing in and keeping the conversation focused on your needs, values and challenges no matter how much or how easily it could go off track.
Each conversation helps in some way to move you forward. - You can hear your coach’s words of wisdom even between sessions.
When you are faced with new challenges, coaching conversations continue or are recalled in your mind and you are able to use ideas, awareness’s, insights, realizations, and ‘aha’s’ from previous conversations.
Recalling your ongoing coaching conversations, you are more likely to experiment and take advantage of more opportunities.
All three of these taken together create the feeling that the coach is truly on your side, unconditionally open, totally objective, and available at a moment’s notice.
While all this may not be true in the literal sense, it feels that way. Your have an advocate who listens to the best part of you, and when you reveal yourself, it’s because that the best part of you is being championed and supported.
