If we are lucky enough to live long enough, all will eventually suffer a setback so severe that it will shake their world. These are the situations or events that, for many people, are in keeping with their “normal” lives and force them to “survive, get through, put one foot in front of the other, seek the light at the end of the tunnel, get out of the dark hole” while they wait for time to pass, for something to alter, for them to get through the difficulty—and return to “normal.” The process of helping clients transition from a Survive vs. Thrive mindset requires several steps. Listening to the repeating patterns of underlying beliefs that suggest that in his or her mind the only way forward in facing adversity is using coping mechanisms and waiting to “get through” is necessary.
