Often, clients get stuck simply because they are not motivated or not motivated in the “right” way to get things done or to maintain a certain activity. They feel that they are obliged to do something instead of being willing or wanting to do something. In these cases, clients often use words like “must”, “have to”, or “should” which should be a red flag for coaches as they indicate low-quality motivation. This article Obligation vs. Will by Kincso Biro from Germany shows how investigating the goal or action value for the client can determine the level of motivation.

There is a wide variety of coaching models available for coaches to use or adapt. However, most coaching models are rooted in cognitive behavioral approach and belong more to the behavioral side of the spectrum. There are models that first look at the current situation and then move into a goal setting, and there are other models that first start with the goal setting and then move into developing a better understanding of the current situation. Most models emphasize the importance of generating self-awareness while others, e.g. OSKAR, take a plain solution-focused approach. Coaching models also vary in terms of complexity. Perhaps, the coaching models overview is that simpler models provide more flexibility, while more detailed models provide more guidance.

Reframing helps people to change their mindsets and enables them to redirect their energies to focus on positive things and opportunities. These become available when they replace self-defeating reactions with empowering reactions to achieve their desired results. As coaches, we can use the Reframing Technique at the appropriate time when we pick up red flags such as limiting and self-defeating thoughts and interpretations, poor attitude, and assumptions that are creating problems preventing people from achieving their goals. This article Perception vs. Circumstance by Matthew Trethewey from Hong Kong shows how the Reframing Technique will help people move from being stuck to becoming resourceful, from being preoccupied with doom stories to focusing on creative success stories.
