Could vs. Should, a coaching “power tool,” causes a shift of perspective for the client, allowing them to transition from a disempowered to an empowered position. A client who is disempowered is likely to feel stuck by their “shoulds,” which are acts, feelings, or ways of being that they believe they should be following. They’ll be able to see what’s possible once they’ve shifted to a more empowered mindset, and they’ll be able to build momentum for themselves from there.

This SHOW UP Model concept is based on my professional and personal experience. Appreciative Inquiry, a strength-based approach to organizational change established at Case Western University, as well as concepts from Design Thinking, a human-centered approach to innovation, and the work of Dr. Brené Brown, a research professor at the University of Houston, are all incorporated. This SHOW UP model represents a certain phase in my coaching career. It’s a framework that’s functional right now and could be useful in the future. But I’m writing this with the understanding that if I’m going to actually emerge as a coach, I have to be open to my own development, and that model can and likely will develop over time.

When we think of coaching Adolescent Students, we probably think of coaching in any sport, with the exception of one that has become more well-known in recent years: life coaching.
