In order to fulfill my responsibility as a coach, I created the EXCEL Model. The approach offers a helpful framework to guide clients accomplish their objectives. The concept was helpful in igniting interest and revitalizing work for several people who felt disengaged at their jobs. Others have used it as a parenting tool to help them figure out how to balance meeting their needs with those of their kids. Others still use it to break bad behavior. The EXCEL Model aspires to be a versatile tool. My clients are supported by the EXCEL (End, Explore, Commit, Experiment, Learn) paradigm. Starting with the end in mind is helpful for clients. It keeps them interested.

Interview with Candace Brower, an ICA alumna with expertise in brain based coaching. She used to teach at Northwestern University, and at the moment she is working on a book titled The Mind’s Toolkit. This is a self-help book that can be used by coaches who want to practice brain-based coaching. My impression is that the main focus of brain based coaching is to help people understand how their brain works so they can make it work for them. For instance, you can take control of your brain by realizing you can regulate the flashlight of what you pay attention to.

Judgment vs. Curiosity

I have developed a power tool to help clients move from judgment vs. curiosity. The best way to use this power tool is to investigate how judgment manifests itself in the client. By viewing the situation through the lens of judgment vs. curiosity, the client may become aware that what appeared to be facts are actually judgments. Clients can then try on a more curious perspective and see how the challenges at hand change. For example, a client may begin by stating that their goal is “too difficult.” Coaching may help the client realize that it is not a fact but rather a judgment. It is possible that the client is afraid of failure. When the focus is on how to take steps toward the goal rather than the possibility of failure, the client may allow curiosity to pull him forward.
