The Phoenix – the eagle-like bird who dies in flames and get reborn from its ashes – is a powerful symbol that continues to inspire writers (e.g., Fawkes, the Phoenix created by J.K Rowling as Dumbledore’s trustee companion) and artists in general across generations and cultures, as well as politicians (e.g., San Francisco added the Phoenix to its flag after the earthquake of 1906 as a symbol of the reconstruction of the city) and marketers. From the very beginning of my journey as a coach, I’ve felt that this symbol helps understand and describe what happens when someone engages in a coaching process.

Purposeful Aging Interview, It was an amazing learning experience, but on many different levels. Also, communication – which is the key to coaching – learns to talk to each other on the level where we listen to each other. We ask curious questions so that, with the intention of understanding where the other one is coming from rather than, like, normal conversations where, you know, you’re waiting for your turn to say your part. In this case, as a coach — as I’m sure you know — our job as coaches is to listen and to reflect what we hear, and that gives us a deeper understanding. So, it’s been marvelous. It’s been an outstanding opportunity.

This idea led me to an unexpected journey to a new theory on emotions, specifically the “constructed emotion” view.
