By definition, burnout is a “syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed,” according to the World Health Organization. Burnout is defined as “a mismatch between the nature of the person doing the job and the nature of the job” by experts Maslach and Leiter. An “erosion of the human soul” is the outcome. Burnout is so challenging to recognize because it involves the gradual depletion of a person’s spirit, which is what the word erosion refers to. People who are experiencing burnout symptoms lose their identity and essence, becoming a shadow of who they once were. The person they are now or the one they see in the mirror is no longer the same.
