The literature supports that empathy is closely related to leadership success (Cooper & Sawaf, 1997), and is also related to positive impressions of leaders (Kellett et al., 2002). Although there is evidence to support the importance of empathy in leadership, there is a risk of losing or weakening executive leadership skills (such as planning, organization, problem-solving, and decision-making) in an empathetic manner. This article will try to discuss how coaching and mindfulness can be helpful when leaders pick up empathetic opportunities and respond.

Coaching to balance empathy requires more than one lesson, and leaders need time to practice mindfulness. This power tool of cognitive empathy vs. affective empathy contributes to excellent leadership, which depends on understanding the differences and how to use each person’s unique strengths. Using cognitive empathy requires leaders to think about feelings rather than to feel them directly. Whereas, emotional empathy can also help leaders build trust, harmony, and cooperation.
