Hi, My name is Corinne Zupko and I’m a current ICA student. For the past 8 1/2 years, I’ve been working as a therapist in a mental health setting.
I first heard of the field of coaching about 3 years ago from a counseling intern who was also enrolled in a coach training program. I was quite perplexed about how coaching was different than the therapy I was conducting with clients. As I researched coaching, I learned that it is about helping high-functioning clients create a present and a future that they desire, rather than working to resolve past issues, which is often the focus of therapy. Coaching focuses on a person’s strengths and has a truly positive orientation. It focuses on what is right with you, and as a result, is extremely empowering, powerful, and motivating. I was sold! I realized that I’ve always been a very “coach-like” counselor, and becoming a coach felt like a very natural transition for me.
I researched every coaching program that I could find, knowing that I wanted top-notch training so I could gain certification through the International Coaching Federation (ICF). When I found ICA, I immediately knew that I found a match.
How are you using coaching to make a difference?
Since starting my training in ICA almost a year ago, I have started my own business, and have brought coaching into the mental health setting where I work. My specialty is in helping successful women and men find more peace in their lives – often by reconnecting with a creative part of oneself that has been lost, or through the practice of mindfulness meditation. Results with my clients have been truly remarkable!
What was the most valuable thing you learned at ICA?
There are many things that I love about ICA. First, it was the MOST affordable ICF accredited school I found. As I learned all of the benefits I would be gaining by becoming a student, I couldn’t believe how much “bang for my buck” I would be getting! Second, I loved the flexibility I would have been able to take classes at my own pace. Life happens, and there have been times when I’ve taken needed breaks from classes, only to return to class more energized and motivated. Third, I LOVE how the ICA community is truly global. I always smile when I learn that I’m on a call with people from all over the world – all parts of the USA, England, India, Germany, Mexico, Iran, the Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, Singapore, France, Brazil, Australia, Thailand, Greece, just to name a few! I also found a network of other therapists/coaches through ICA – and this was a very important aspect for me. As I’ve connected with other therapists/coaches we’ve helped each other navigate the transition from counseling into coaching. It has been invaluable! I feel very fortunate to be part of the ICA community and coaching profession!
