There is also a body of research that show a link between thoughts and wellbeing because our thoughts has the capacity to influence our emotional state and the release of stress chemicals into our system; that is how powerful thoughts are. The good news is that our brain has the capacity to change- neuroplasticity.
According to (Pascual-Leone, 2006), Neural plasticity is evolution’s invention to enable the nervous system to escape the restrictions of its own genome and thus adapt to environmental pressures, physiologic changes, and experiences. At neural system level two steps of plasticity can be identified: unmasking existing connections that may be followed by establishment of new ones possibly even with integration of new neural structures and neurons. In any case, plastic changes may not necessarily represent a behavioural gain for a given subject, as they represent the mechanism for development and learning, as much as a cause of pathology and disease. The challenge is to learn enough about the mechanisms of plasticity to be able to guide them; suppressing changes that may lead to undesirable behaviours while accelerating or enhancing those that result in a behavioural benefit.
There are research that also indicates that negative thoughts about one’s self has detrimental effects on achievement (Dickhäuser et al., 2011)
In order to live fulfilling and productive lives, we must learn to control our thoughts and what we say about ourselves or our situation. Some practical ways of doing this are
To be able to change your words, you need to change your thoughts and to change your thoughts you need to change your words. Renew your mind with the word of God, that changes your thought process and you will begin to speak the right words. The bible says that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks. When you hear yourself saying the right words long enough, you will begin to believe it yourself. What do you believe about yourself? Do you believe you are failure or you can never do anything right/ or nothing good will come out of you? I am sure that you know by now that it is not true!
Fear
Fear keeps a lot of people stuck and not able to take action or do things that they know they should. I sat frozen in my seat starring into my computer screen and looking at what I should be doing; but for some strange reason I felt motionless and not able to take any action. A crippling feeling of fear and anxiety was brewing up and I wondered where this came from. I questioned this emotion, what it was and what it was telling me about the task that was before me. I honestly did not understand this. What am I really afraid of? I questioned myself and began to look inward. My discovery was this –I was having some doubts about the quality and the quantity of the work that was being presented and worried about whether or not the outcome of the study was good enough. What if it is not good enough and got rejected for publication? That will make me feel terrible and may imply that I am not good enough. But is this really true? Having written and submitted several articles for publication and aware of the fact that most papers will not be accepted immediately but most of the time you will receive feedback from reviewers and suggestions for corrections before it is eventually accepted for publication. So is this a fear of failure or fear of rejection? Maybe both. Common types of fear are- fear of failure, fear of lack, fear of commitment, fear of people, fear of wealth, fear of heights, fear of……………..…I am sure you can fill in the gap.
