Adding meaning to the life of others is the job of a coach and that’s an essential element for a leader in any environment. I have been in a corporate environment for last 18 years and I constantly feel that senior leaders need to practice more of coaching to groom better, empower their teams, or seniors. Coaching today is being accepted as a domain that can not only yield results but also nurture more leaders.
Managers, teachers, mentors, consultants are leaders by virtue of their expertise; however they are reckoned or adorned by their people when they are able to coach others to be their best. Thus we see that leadership is not only about coaching subordinates; its about living by the coaching philosophy and attributes to constantly nurture the environment and unleash the remarkable potential around. All of the 15 attributes of a coach are absolute essentials even for a successful leader, in any style of leadership.
A leader has the responsibility of creating more leaders and that is possible only when leader is willing to live a coaching lifestyle. Thus Coaching can not only be a leadership style, it’s also essential as a way of lifestyle for every leader. To identify more leaders in the environment or to be a good coachee in instances of being open to learning, a leader needs to practice the lifestyle of a coach. As a coach and a department head I have definitely reaped the benefit of adopting this lifestyle in professional and personal life. I have also recommended the ICA certification for some of my organization leaders as a part of the management team, which is now under exploration. Senior leaders are constantly interacting with the top talent thus if they are the pioneers in the organization results accomplished would be phenomenal.
