Law of Attraction: Manifesting an Abundant Coaching Session
I remember the moment I first encountered law of attraction (LOA), now popularly known as The Secret, authored by Rhonda Byrne. Inside a little metaphysical bookstore, 2000 miles from my home, there sat one copy of the book, sealed in plastic and enshrouded by glass, on a brightly lit shelf with various crystals standing guard around it . Of course I didn’t ask to see it, let alone touch it. At the time, I didn’t believe I was worthy enough to know about The Secret, whatever it was. But I never forgot the title – how could you? (everyone wants to know The Secret). Shortly after returning home from my trip, I called my life coach and asked about it. That was more than eight years ago.
My coach had indeed heard of it and watched the movie – there was a movie? – which I promptly bought on-line and enjoyed with a bottle of wine the following weekend. And it changed my life, and my idea of how life is meant to be lived. And then I set forth on a journey of learning everything out there on LOA. I’m still learning, after eight years! In doing so, I managed to change my life course, leaving a corporate job for my own personal training business, and now I’ve added another passion – Life Coaching!
How did I transform my life? In addition to giving all credit to my Higher Power, my Life Coach and the Angels looking after me, I began to utilize LOA principles in manifesting more happiness in my life. Such a simple request – happiness – yet I struggled for well over 30 years trying to make it so in my life. All it took was following the four principles of LOA:
Sounds simple. And it is, if you understand what is expected from you when utilizing LOA. As a coach, I frequently utilize the LOA principles as a tool with clients who are interested in manifesting abundance. In doing do, and to help the client truly understand the LOA expectations, I’ve found it helpful to focus on one principle per session. Example: For a first session, the client will spend the entire hour only identifying what she wants in her life. A slow but steady progression through the LOA principles helps the client become more self aware of what they are asking for in life and why they have not received their desires. Yet!
Identify What You Want
In beginning with this principle, the client states their desires, but more importantly, she determines what is standing in the way from getting what she wants.
The two greatest obstacles to identifying what you want are fear – the fear of letting yourself have what you want, and bad habit – the habit of having most of your attention focused on what you do not want
(Miller, page 26).
Asexplained in my Power Tool, Superhero verses Inner Saboteur, those two obstacles can be traced back to one’s own inner saboteur, an inner voice that questions and states the exact opposite of what the client wants. And it is the coach’s job to ask: Are your thoughts authentic to who you want to become ? Or is the inner-saboteur taking over, trying to suppress or deny your wishes?
Occasionally, a client will not know what they want or how to identify their wants. And I’ve found that too often, that client has been listening to the saboteur for too long, lacks self-confidence, self- esteem and perhaps has been listening to others who attempt to prescribe what she needs. Again, this is where the coach comes in to try another strategy. With the belief that the client possesses all the answers they need, what she truly desires needs to be uncovered in a different fashion, other than verbally discussing it. Here’s where the Vision Board comes into play. When the client can’t verbally identify what she wants, a Vision Board helps. Ask the client to start saving pictures of people, places and things that make them feel good and then posting them on a board, in a prominent place, where the client can always see it. The Vision Board serves as a visual reminder of things that make the client feel happy or joyful. The board is also a visual reminder that can help quiet the inner saboteur.
After the client has identified what they want, it’s very important for the coach to help her start feeling positive about manifesting a vision.
Whatever you feel, whether good or bad, determines your frequency, and like a magnet you attract the people, events, and circumstances that are on the same frequency!
(Byrne, The Power, page 43).
Especially with the vision board exercise, it will be hard not to feel positive and uplifted after looking at things that make you feel joy! As the coach, gauge the client’s emotions and support her in maintaining positive self-awareness, which is essential for manifesting abundance. Making the client aware of her emotions and how it affects the manifestation of her desires are key before moving on to the next principle.
