Some large yachts are managed entirely by the Captain onboard however many are contracted to land based management companies. These companies generally look after a fleet of yachts and while they assist the onboard crew with administrative tasks they also oversee some important statutory requirements. They essentially look after the owner’s interest and implementing coaching could be done on a larger scale though these Management
Companies as opposed to dealing with the Captains as individuals.
Time is another important consideration. It is very difficult to find time for formal training in the very busy schedules of senior crew and Captains. Coaching can be included much more easily than any formal school situation and it is personal to the individual rather than being a broad theoretical approach.
We can conclude by saying that Captains are expected have top class business and administration skills, build a fantastic team and communicate effectively but at no stage are they taught how to do any of it. Coaching should fill this void.
Conclusion:
Coaching has been introduced worldwide in the corporate and private sectors but for some reason, the yachting industry is still struggling along unassisted. The introduction of coaching at senior levels will have a notable affect on management skills and therefore effect the entire team, however introducing coaching for the entire team will result in every member of the crew benefiting from enhanced job satisfaction, intra- and inter personal skills and the collective improvement in productivity and teamwork will have a lasting affect on the industry. There should be no further delay in the collaboration of coaching and the yachting industry.
