(Working Women In Transition Coach, INDIA)
Objective
The objectives of this research are to:
a) bring forth key issues faced by women in sustaining their career post having children
b) identify key characteristics of jobs that women look for when returning to work post having children
While this research is primarily intended to provide coaches with a deeper understanding of working mothers and their needs, a secondary objective of this research is also to equip corporates with information that might be relevant for them in creating systems which enable women to sustain their careers post child birth.
Research Methodology
Secondary research was conducted to review available information related to the topic. In addition, an online survey was conducted of 100 women from different walks of life, across countries. The survey data was analyzed based on which inferences were drawn and conclusions made.
Background
Data indicates that women face covert or actual discrimination in terms of lower pay, fewer senior positions being offered etc. Childbirth often deepens these issues and has further adverse impact on the self-esteem of women.
Career is of high importance to women as they seek stimulation, challenges, achievement and enrichment in their work. Increasing attention has been given to high-achieving women who appear to be leaving their careers in favor of staying home full-time to raise children. Some commentators interpret this trend as reflecting these women’s embrace of a “new traditionalism,” a rejection of feminist goals in favor of more traditional gender roles. Although family concerns figure prominently, they are not the major reason behind most women’s career decisions.
