You have core beliefs that guide the decisions you make. They affect how you interpret the events in your life and they influence the way you think, feel, and behave.
There are many different beliefs you have about yourself, other people, and the world around you. And while you’re likely to think that all of your beliefs are 100 per cent accurate, the truth is you likely hold onto at least a few core beliefs that are irrational and unproductive, that we call limiting beliefs. The unrealistic, self-limiting beliefs you hold onto, hold you back from reaching your greatest potential.
3 Types of Unhealthy Beliefs
Here are three types of unhealthy beliefs that will make you less effective:
- Unhealthy Beliefs About Yourself – Concluding that you are a loser, a failure, unlikable, or incapable will prevent you from doing your best. Even overly optimistic beliefs can be unhealthy. Thinking you’re the best at everything you do or that you are above the rules can be just as dangerous to your well-being as an exaggeratedly negative core belief about yourself.
- Unhealthy Beliefs About Others – Believing everyone is against you, untrustworthy, or manipulative will make it impossible to develop healthy relationships. Similarly, believing everyone can be trusted or that everyone is a kind person can cause you to be taken advantage or to get into relationships that aren’t good for you.
- Unhealthy Beliefs About the World – Assuming that you can’t succeed in today’s world or thinking that the world is too dark of a place to ever be happy will take a toll on your life. On the flipside, minimizing social problems and looking at the world through rose-coloured glasses isn’t helpful either.
There are many different beliefs you have about yourself, other people, and the world around you. And while you’re likely to think that all of your beliefs are 100 per cent accurate, the truth is you likely hold onto at least a few core beliefs that are irrational and unproductive, that we call limiting beliefs.
Limiting beliefs lie underneath any issue we experience. Those limiting beliefs make us not commit (or otherwise commit to something we rather choose to believe), not trust in ourselves and doubt, in other words, hold those perspectives that limit us and hold us back from the happiness we are seeking.
To recognise such a belief you should first make your Client aware of such a thing. To educate your client.
When I start working with a Client, whether he/she aware of it or not, one holds a number of certain beliefs that give a certain perspective on the client itself/other people or a situation. The coaching process goes much more smooth and efficient when the client is aware of what possible can get in a way and willing to see a different perspective. In other words, you can start challenging your limiting beliefs with the help of coaching. When you fully identify a set of beliefs you instinctively divest your belief in them. These shifts happen just through your expanded awareness. Just by identifying your beliefs you facilitate change in your emotions and behaviour without a lot of work. You can take a different action to see the different results that will help your brain to rewire from what it`s used to perceive as the only truth. By seeing changes, it will be easier to see a different perspective and move on with what you desire to achieve.
