The secret of getting ahead is getting started. The secret of getting started is breaking your complex, overwhelming tasks into small, manageable tasks, and then starting on that first one. Mark Twain
Going is defined as the act of leaving or departing. Other words that are associated with going are progress, advancement, active and alive.
Staying is defined as spending time in a place or situation. A stop, halt, pause, standstill, linger, pause, wait and tarry.
Going
For the purpose of this writing, the intention is that going, along with the aforementioned definition, is seen as leaving or letting go of a situation that is no longer serving you, to go to a place that is more beneficial and empowering.
A question that may arise is; how will I know when it is time to go? The basic answer is; there will be signs. These signs may come in the form of comments, your gut instinct or inklings. When you see the signs, the important thing is to pay attention and take action.
It is important to understand that as soon as you make the decision to leave or let go, different challenges will arise. With awareness and mindfulness as these challenges arise, manage them effectively rather than letting them hinder you.
Consider this, when you get clear about where you are going, if you take several steps in that direction every day, you will get there eventually
What keeps us from “going”?
For some individuals, it is the comfort or their surroundings or their present circumstances. For others it is the fear of the unknown. Maybe it could be:
Well regardless of the reason, let us change the energy by thinking of the benefits of moving forward to a place of growth and more opportunities. Let us leave the mundane unfulfilled places, to pursue a charged, passionate, purposeful life.
So as you get some clarity about where you are going, release the brakes, refuse to be held back and then say goodbye to your old friend procrastination and become active and intentional instead of just going through the motions.
“Going” requires planning as well as resilience and determination in the face of every challenge. In his book The Success Principles, Jack Canfield teaches that you must “Choose to Succeed” and the first step towards success is to create a “Road Map” that will guide you towards your objectives. If you are going to get that business up and running, complete that university degree or make progress in any area of your life, having a plan or “road map” will be very important. Essentially priorities need to be set in order so that your time, money or other resources are not wasted.
As you move on look for the valuable lessons that you would have learnt from the place that you are leaving, but make sure that there is no unfinished business left behind. Closure is important.
Determine the things that you most definitely have to leave behind, old mindsets, patterns and behaviors. Start unpacking. Lay aside the weights embrace your freedom set yourself an intention that as you move on, you will do all necessary not to go back.
While leaving a situation that is no longer serving is a wise choice, it may not happen all at once. It is very possible that it will happen as a gradual process. As you accomplish each step celebrate your achievement. The important thing to do, is to at least make a start. Grace Cirocco supports this idea through the title of her book “Take the step the bridge will be there”. She suggests that
Taking action builds bridges to possibilities. Action nurtures self-esteem and self-respect. When we stare down fear and take action, our lives can be transformed from ordinary to extraordinary.
