A Coaching Model By Kotaro Takahashi, Business Coach, UNITED KINGDOM
Finding the purpose of work
People are struggling to find the purpose of work in recent years. Especially young millennium professionals, earning a lot of money is not their main purpose. They are constantly seeking purpose in what they do for a living and at the same time want to know how their job is helping them get to the top (Moore, 2014). However, it is not easy for them to find it. For those who are willing to finding a dream job, I came up with a useful framework called the VTPPF model.
What is the VTPPF model?
VTPPF model is originally inspired by Ikigai Model (Myers, 2018) and several design thinking methods. This model is to look for a reason for being. This is useful to identify the four elements (What you love, what the world needs, what you can be paid for, what you are good at), then find out the point those four elements are duplicating, which is called Ikigai.
VTPPF model is a bit similar to the Ikigai model when it comes to its approach to find out a job that you love. The framework is as below.
How does it work?
STEP 1: Value
To find out a client’s value, ask the below questions.
- Is there anyone you respect? And if yes, who?
- What kind of things do you think lacking in our society?
- What would you value yourself?
- What kind of messages would you like to tell to someone?
- What kind of messages would you not like to tell to someone?
After writing down answers, then pick up some important keywords from those answers.
Finally, convert those keywords to a purpose of work.
STEP 2: Talent
Same as STEP 1, answer the below questions.
- What was the most fruitful experience that you remember in the past?
- When did you feel irritated recently? And why?
- What are you good at?
- In your past job, what do you think you could have done more?
- In your past job, what was the most evaluated work?
After writing down answers, then pick up some important keywords from those answers.
Finally, summarise what you are good at. It will be your strength.
STEP 3: Passion
For STEP 3, ask yourself about your passion, focus on yourself.
- What do you want to learn even it is expensive?
- What kind of books do you have on your bookshelf?
- What kind of stories/messages did you get impressed with the most?
- Who would you like to show your gratitude to?
- What do you angry about our society?
Then, pick up important keywords.
STEP 4: Purpose of work
Think about the purpose of work combining the keywords from STEP 2 and 3.
STEP 5: Find your dream job
Find out what kind of job would be fulfilled your purpose of work.
Why this approach is important?
When it comes to finding out a dream job, people are easily mixing up many emotions and aspects, then end up not being able to reach the objective. To proceed and reach what a client wants, applying the VTPPF model would work to help to identify the important aspects before just thinking about a dream job. I came up with the framework after a few tries to use some questions with several clients. After the session, everyone could get their own insights about finding a dream job. Highly recommended when you coach with someone who wants to find a dream job.
