What outcome do I want?
Start with the end in mind. What specific, measurable outcome do you want to achieve? This is not an activity, but an end-goal. Your first question shouldn’t be “what should I do?” but rather “what result am I committed to achieving?” The first step is about becoming absolutely crystal clear on the outcome you want. It’s not about creating a do list.
What motivates me?
Motivation is the emotional drive that comes from understanding the purpose of what you are trying to achieve. The aim of this step is to find the compelling reasons needed to follow through and achieve your outcome even in the face of obstacles. Ask yourself “why am I committed to this goal?”
How do I get there?
What specific actions can I take to achieve my desired outcome? How am I going to get there? By staying committed to an outcome rather than a list of to dos you ensure that you’ll keep busy with the most important, necessary actions needed to attain your outcome and to ensure you are productive and making progress and not just feeling busy.
Remember the Pareto’s principle, the 80/20 rule. 80% of your results come from 20% of your effort. Which specific actions will make the biggest difference toward attaining your outcome?
