Interpersonal effectiveness
The take feedback process as a preliminary approach to know the client can be an optional step if the client wants to invest on the long term for self development and growth.
When a specific engagement starts, the ‘Take Feedback’ process will, in a cyclic loop gather enough data and observations from the client and other defined feedback providers to verify if the actions designed for the improvement is producing desired results. The data and the information will be used on a periodic basis by the coach and the client to make mid course corrections to the action plan to ensure that the actions are producing the desired results.
Face the Truth
Facing the Truth will be the initial phase in the context of a new engagement for solving a specific situation/issue. The client and the coach will define and scope a problem area based on the following:
- The current situation
- Specific contribution to the situation by the client
- Client perspectives of the situation
- 360 degree perspective of the situation
- Desired end goal/state
The coach will deploy coaching skills such as Powerful questioning, CBT, perspective positioning, power tools and other coaching techniques to arrive at answers for the above five dimensions. The goal will be to arrive at the root cause of an issue/situation instead of stopping with the symptom.
Define the Purpose
During this phase the client will define a purpose and a mission for implementing the change related action plan. The client will be taken through a visualization process to visualize the future state. This will result in creative story writing session by the client. The client will write a short one paragraph of their future state with the assumption that the future state has already arrived. The story will be about the journey the client took to arrive at the future state. The story will help to create the action plan for the customer. The client and the coach will co create appropriate structures to enable the client to execute to the action plan. The action plan will be so created such that low hanging fruits are prioritized for earlier execution so that small wins can be celebrated to further fuel the motivation. The review meetings and schedules will be fixed during this phase.
While an executive may have a lot of actions in his/her plate, they need to develop their own mechanism to verify if some of the actions in their list is relevant to the problem/improvement initiative that they are pursuing using the coaching engagement. They also need to make sure that he coaching related actions, are more aligned with their strengths and values. During the action development phase the client will go through a process of developing actions and alternate actions and weigh them against the criteria of alignment with their strengths and values and add them to their action Q and ensure enough resources are committed to that action.
Take Action
During the action phase the client will execute to the agreed actions and use the designed structures to enable actions. The client will log actions and self -observations as designed jointly with the coach. Appropriate observations will be logged in the feedback database so that it can be reviewed for mid course correction. During this phase the client will have the option to learn and practice the ‘Self Introspection’ technique to reflect on the self to figure if the desired changes are happening at the deeper levels. The client will learn to celebrate small wins so that their internal motivation is in a steady path for improvement. The client will be actively managing their Action Q to make sure that their self development related actions maintain the appropriate focus and priority and do not get muddled up with everything else the client does.
