A Coaching Model created by Sairam Jayaraman
(Executive Coaching, INDIA)
The coaching model has been specifically tuned to serve the executive coaching needs. The model has been developed based on the coaching techniques taught by the ICA and has been extended by incorporating principles of “Positive Psychology’, Good to great concepts taught by Mr Jim Collins and has incorporated aspects of spirituality such as self observation and introspection.
In the flywheel model of self and organizational improvement, Jim Collins the author asks us to imagine a huge flywheel, 100 feet in diameter and ten feet thick, weighing 25 tons. Starting at standstill we start pushing the flywheel until it starts to budge. Over a few days of constant effort the wheel may do one turn. The intent is to keep pushing and pushing and slowly the flywheel begins to pick up speed. Eventually the flywheel begins to spin on its own. Our constant effort in one direction makes it so. Staying with this course of action brings sustainable results.
The coaching model introduced in this paper builds on this concept of flywheel. The self observation aspect of the model helps to introduce the appropriate feedback loop in the process that will generate enough acceleration to the flywheel or de-accelerate it if it is not producing the desired results.
The movement of the flywheel symbolically represents the momentum that the client will gain in their desired initiative of change and improvement. The process of facing the truth, defining/re-defining purpose and taking the appropriate action maps to the initial effort that needs to be put in to move the flywheel in the desired direction.
The Process Steps
Take Feedback
During the initial phase of starting a coaching relationship, the coach and the client will work together to collect enough data on the client belief systems, strength, weakness, history of their professional life, high points and low points and any other data that the client may have including 360 degree feedback, standard assessments, manager performance feedback etc. The discussions will result in the self assessment by the client on their degree of the energy of human spirit in them. The client will rate the following based on standard assessments and/or in discussion with the coach.
