A Coaching Model Created by Sabine Röthlisberger
(Leadership Coach, SWITZERLAND)
Every change starts with an idea, how to do it differently…
My IDEA – Coaching Model is designed for Business and Leadership coaching. Business people are normally used to follow a process and to achieve their goals. My coaching model is similar by providing a process through the journey, which supports the client to realize their desired outcome.
At one point in coaching clients start to see their situation from a different angle and you can see it in their face, when they start to have the first idea about doing something different than before or trying something new. At that moment, the energy flows and the clients get eager to try out the new solution. Being stuck turns into having a plan and move ahead…
The IDEA – Coaching Model starts with an Initiation phase where the trust is built and the coaching agreement is established. In the Discovery phase, the situation is analyzed from different perspectives and a set of options is explored. The chosen option comes into action in the Empowerment phase, where the plan is realized. In the last phase Accomplishment, a review of the results is conducted and possible adaptation of the action plan is discussed.
Initiation
As some business people are still unfamiliar with coaching, in the initiation phase it is important to explain the coaching process and to build trust. It is the start of a coach client relationship. The aim is to create a space, where it is all about the client’s person and what they want to accomplish.
The coaching agreement will be established, where the collaboration and the conditions of the coaching are defined and agreed upon.
Discovery
The situation needs to be analyzed by the client from different perspectives. The coach supports this analysis by asking powerful questions and by listening carefully. It is important to discuss the values and beliefs of the client in order to explore a set of options that are in alignment with those values and beliefs. These options are evaluated by the client in regards to which is most successful and fits best to the client and her/his strengths. Possible consequences of the options are discussed and the client verifies if she/he can live with them when they occur. The plan for the chosen option is created as well as in some cases a plan B and C, in case the situation turns out differently. Any structure that supports the client in achieving the goals is taken into consideration.
Empowerment
The option is chosen, the plan is made and the energy starts to flow. The client is now ready to try out the defined actions. The client gives his/her commitment to the plan and sets the timeline for the realization. A crucial part of this phase is the alignment of the plan with the other goals the client has in his/her life. Obstacles that could come in the way have to be discussed and a workaround to be defined.
Accomplishment
In the last phase, it is time to review the conducted actions and to check the progress of the client towards the achievement of his/her goals. Possible changes to the plan are discussed and it has to be reviewed if the agreed outcome is as expected or needs refinement. It is important to take the time for acknowledgement, to look back with the client and to celebrate what has been achieved.
At the end of the coaching relationship, the takeaways of the client are discussed and a feedback about the coaching is requested.
