Elevate Your Leadership by Reaching For Your Highest Point
Overview
To achieve success leading others, we must first learn effectively lead ourselves. Before we can expect others to follow us, we must develop a deep awareness and understanding of our leadership style as well as its impact on the goals that we have set for ourselves. When leaders understand the connection between how their leadership style impacts their desired outcomes through those they lead, it usually results in an increase of their confidence, greater effectiveness within their span of control, and a clearer focus when selecting their team.
Leaders who fail to acknowledge this truth are frequently burned out because their efforts do not support their desired outcomes, and because leaders are measured by their results, they must be clear about who they are, who they can lead, and the type of legacy they want to leave.
Begin with the end in mind Stephen R. Covey
If a leader desires consistent work across areas of oversight but their leadership style is laissez-faire with which is characterized as being “hands-off” their outcomes may not align with their intended goal. Laissez-faire is extremely effective when managing managers while less effective when managing front line staff where standard work is necessary.
Elevation leadership coaching is designed to help new and existing leaders align their style of leadership with their desired results by strengthening their awareness of their leadership style and setting goals to align with their success.
Elevation Leadership Coaching is for new leaders or leaders transitioning to higher levels of leadership. It helps clients find their high Point where their leadership acumen meets their heart’s passion. It is allowing the client to tap into their inner genius through tools and deep introspection.
Coaching Style
In order for powerful coaching to take place, there must be trust, commitment, and a willingness to explore. I am Dora the explorer, searching for the gold within through powerful questioning, active listening, trust, and self-exploration tools. I ask to go on expeditions with my clients to explore who they are, what they want, and help them develop a roadmap to excavate the gold within. The gold within can be excavated in the High Point Elevation Leadership Coaching Model!
HighpointElevation Leadership Coaching Model
Before clients reach their High Point there are two main phases of the Elevation Coaching Model. The first phase is the foundation phase, which includes evaluating, maximize/manage, and establish. Once the foundation phase has been completed the client will know who they are and who they desire to be as a leader.
The second phase is the elevation phase which is focused on action and gives the client traction towards their desired goals. This phase allows the client to create, execute, and refine/elevate their vision. When all the steps have been climbed, the client will have a clear understanding of who, what, when, where, why, and how to be the leader they desire. When awareness, standards, and action takes place the client will have successfully reached their High Point.
The “Elevation Leadership” model supports clients who want to take their leadership to the next level through a series of steps to help clarify and strengthen their leadership acumen.
Foundation Phase
Evaluate
ElevationLeadership Coaching model begins with an emphasis on evaluating the client’s leadership strengths, weakness, opportunities, and threats by utilizing proven tools such as introspection, 360 reviews, and/or strengthsFinder. We will also utilize tools that personally resonate with the client’s core values.
This phase allows the client to evaluate how they view themselves and how others perceive them. Leadership is a mixture of influence and effectiveness. In order to elevate the client’s leadership, they must evaluate their role in both areas. Leadership by default requires followers. Evaluating who follows you and why and who doesn’t will provide insight on your influence that will directly impact your effectiveness.
Maximize/Manage
The second step in the foundation phase identifies ways to help clients explore and maximize their leadership strengths and opportunities, while also supporting them to take steps to manage their identified weaknesses and threats. Strengths and weakness are controlled by the client, while opportunities and threats present themselves, and the client must position themselves for maximum benefit in all areas. Together we will look for ways to maximize and manage those areas to ensure effective leadership and desired success.
Coaching is exposing your gold, refining your cut, and allowing your beauty to shine.
Establish
The final step in the foundation phase drives the client to clearly define and establish themselves. We will work together to establish a personal leadership mission statement that will serve as a “guiding light” to help govern all future decision making. The client’s mission statement is based on the client’s personal and professional values.
Through a series of powerful questioning and deep introspection, the client will customize their mission statement to clearly establish their purpose and identify what is truly important to them as a leader and a person. A personal mission statement is personal, it provides focus, simplifies decision making, and holds the client accountable for their decisions and actions based on their personal values.
Elevation Phase
Create
In the first step of the elevation phase, commonly known as “traction to action”, the client creates their vision by identifying and prioritizing their Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time-Bound(SMART)goals.
Having a clear vision increases effectiveness and influence across the client’s span of control. SMART goals provide clarity, thereby, eliminating redundancies, minimizing communication breakdowns and other tasks referred to as busywork. Once the vision is created the client can move to execute the vision.
Execute
Determining an appropriate execution strategy based on the priorities the client has outlined is key in the execution step. As the saying goes, if you cannot measure it you cannot manage it. In leadership, everything is measured from employee satisfaction to product output. During the execution phase, the client uses the previously defined SMART goals to clearly define the steps to achieve those goals. After the steps are defined the client must also create key performance indicators that will assist in measuring and monitoring the progress.
It is very important for the client to examine their style of leadership, their strengths, and their weaknesses when determining their steps of execution. Having alignment in those areas will increase their success in this phase. Depending on the complexity of the goals the execution step make take several phases for full deployment. Once deployed refinement may be necessary.
Refine/Elevate
There are often bumps along the way and the process in the execution step may need to be refined. It is rare that the first execution attempt is completely successful. Therefore, refinement is often needed before complete elevation. When the process needs refinement we continue to work together until the client feels they have reached their elevation point where they can continue to carry the process independently.
HighPoint
In leadership, there are often several goals to complete and multiple priorities to maintain. Once the foundation phase has been completed, it may be necessary to continuously move through the elevation phase to obtain ultimate success. The High Point Leadership Coaching Model requires clients to explore themselves in ways they may not have in the past. Therefore, each success and failure will strengthen the client’s leadership acumen and provide them with the ability to create a consistent, personalized, leadership approach customized for their success.
