A Coaching Model Created by Raghuraman J
(Executive Coach, INDIA)
Happy to present the 3 D Model of Coaching: `
Ask Roger Federer as to how did he produce that ace that finished the match and made him victorious!!! Chances are that you will get a smile back, but not an answer since there is any!! This is because, research indicates that few acts are conceived in the mind and enacted at the right time to be of value to the beholder. Histories of great acts have invariably come about at the back of great dreams, pursued relentlessly by the dreamer, living it every day with a Missionary focus. Living their dreams gives them reasons to exist.
My Coaching Model; which I call it the 3 D Model, rests on the idea of “Dream” as a start point followed by “Design” and “Do” as the third step. While Dream or dreaming is a non-rationale and slightly an emotional indulgence of good or bad imageries, the idea of Design calls for a rational thinking behavior. Thus the model attempts to draw both the elements of brain of the client and therefore amenable for tracking and monitoring. Thus the model helps explore all aspects that govern a client’s life experiences.
I will be taking my client through these 3 steps during my coaching assignment. Below are a few aspects of each of these steps.
Dream:
In Dreams, we enter a world that’s entirely our own. J.K. Rowling
The Process:
In this phase, the client is encouraged to visualize a desired future state using the visualization techniques. He will be introduced to the ideas of reflection, power of silence and basic meditation techniques which will facilitate his dreaming session. Thru the use of Wheel of Life framework, and by encouraging the use of images/pictures/metaphors and role plays the client will be helped to take a helicopter view! He will be asked to record the best moments of his life so far which will be used to figure out his strength or preferred ways with which he connects with the world. Use of any psychometric tools such as MBTI/Strength Finder can supplement the diagnosis. In a way, the tools can also be seen by the client as non-threatening!! `
Since the visualization experience can impact the client positively, as a coach, I shall match his enthusiasm and energy during the dialogues and will suspend my own Judgments while helping him process his dreams. Spotting for opportunities to acknowledge the client’s achievements and offering to celebrate such victories is bound to enhance the trust between me and the client. A robust and co-created Coaching Agreement will pave the way for honoring my commitment to the client’s time schedule.
