A Coaching Model Created by Min Liu
(Cross Culture Coach, Business Coach, CHINA)
“We are not coaching the situation. We are coaching the person.” When I first time heard about this expression, it was like a puff of wind passing my ear. I wasn’t ready to digest the essence of coaching at all. That’s why I found it so challenging to be in that driver seat of a coaching session. In short, I had no idea about what I was supposed to do as the coach in a session.
Fast forward to today, after hours and hours of learning and practicing within the coaching campus created by International Coach Academy, I had that ‘Aha’ moment and realized: How important it is for a coach to focus on the client, to find out who the client is instead of what the client is doing!
We are coaching the person!
It all comes down to people. We are working on a relationship, the coach-client relationship. It’s all about the people!
With that being said, it is essential that we center the question of ‘who the client is’ in our coaching process. Because that’s how we work with our client helping them gain new awareness and supporting them going forward with results.
My learning and practicing experience with ICA gave birth to my People Model in coaching.
P – Pinpoint
Find out what that is the client wants to address during the coaching session. Lock the topic or the issue that the client would love to talk about.
E – Elaborate
The client is being invited to elaborate his/her thoughts around the topic. Often times it is when we verbalize a situation or an emotion that we reveal our deepest belief and value. Sometimes, with those limiting thoughts in the way, our vision is being blurred if not being blocked.
O – Observe
The coach observes the flow of the client’s thoughts, spots the underlying belief or emotions behind what’s being elaborated.
P – Point of View
Through observation and effective feedback, the coach helps the client look at the situation or the topic from different points of view. It is often here when a new awareness arises.
L – Leverage
With the new learning and the awareness, the client leverages what he/she gains from the coaching conversation. The client applies the new perspective.
E –Evolve
The energy of the client evolves to a positive state. The client feels a sense of control over the situation and removes him/herself away from being stuck to moving ahead. In such process, an action plan is being created or a solution found.
I would love to take this opportunity to thank all the staff and faculty members of ICA and dear peer coaches who I have had the privilege to contact and work with. Without the expertise in passing on the rich knowledge and experience so generously from each of our trainers and the full-hearted support from my peer coaches from the ICA coach community, I wouldn’t be able to come up with my coaching model. It is with a heart full of gratitude that I’m humbled to introduce you my People Model and look forward to,in practice, presenting it to you.
