A Coaching Model Created by Magalie van Amerongen
(Expat and Life Coach, BRUNIE)
You’re the driver of your own life; don’t let anyone steal your seat.
When I describe a coaching journey to my surrounding, I invite people to think of a road trip.
A road trip being an adventure with no time limitation, where you will encounter different adventures, reflections, being free to be who you are without judgments, limitations or expectations. An adventure where you discover who you are and who you want to be.
It’s an adventure were the focus will be on you, your values, your believes and your dreams.
It might not always be an easy ride. You might encounter different kinds of weather, road blocks, short cuts, laughter, tears, and quiet moments. You will manly look through your windshield and once in a while in your back mirror. It’s your adventure.
As the client you will always be in control in the driver’s seat. You will be the one with the foot on the gas pedal, in control of the speed. You decide where you want to go, where we have to stop, what kind of music we listen to, which side roads we take and the final destination.
As a coach I will listen to you, ask you questions, I will reflect back to you what I am hearing and I will remain silent to give you space you need to process things yourself. I will sit right beside you along your journey. I laugh with you, have a shoulder you can cry on, I will be your partner in crime, help you when you need me to hold the steering wheel and help you get back on track in case you lose focus of your final destination. I will keep you accountable for pursuing the challenges you have chosen and help you achieve the chosen destination.
The coaching process
Before we jump in the car and head off, we need to do the necessary preparations. Let’s close the doors to maintain confidentiality.
Step 1: Preparations
a) Inventory
In this first phase we will set the foundations. I will create an open space for you to feel free and secure. We will discover what your foundations are, your values. We will identify and challenge your limiting beliefs.
We will explore the baggage you have, what you want to take along and what you want to leave behind. Beliefs that are not aligned with your values give you negative energy, block you and retain you from moving forward.
Making this inventory is an essential step as we need to know the tools we have that will help you make your own choices and decisions.
Step 2: Explore our final destination
In this phase we want to set ambitious but achievable goals.
What is going to be your end destination of this new adventure? What is your goal and how are we going to get there? Why have you chosen this goal? What are the stops we have to make to arrive at our end destination? What are the potential obstacles/challenges you could face?
When people go on a road trip they often know where they are going to start and have an idea of where they will finish. The road going there is often an open map. As it is something far ahead it is rewarding and helpful to plan a couple of stops in between.
Step 3: Get in the driver’s seat and start driving! Action!
Having gained knowledge on where you are and where you want to go, we can now get into action.
What are your options? What is going to be your first stop? What is your deadline? How are you going to get there? How will you know that we have arrived?
What will you do when we encounter a barrier? How will you celebrate once you are there?
Once you start pushing the accelerator the car will come into movement. This will get you moving away from the baggage you choose to leave behind and toward a new destination.
I will ride beside you. Cheering you on, motivating and challenging you to go beyond your current limitations and maximise your potential.
When we will encounter obstacles that stand in our way, we will discover different options to do something about them.
We will also set up an emergency plan. We will create a plan on how to handle situations that distract you, block you and allow you to get back on the road.
I will also keep you accountable. Not to tell you off but to help you stay in action. It’s about sticking to your plan (which can change along the way) and to support you.
Step 4: Celebrate Success!
With every session we will move closer to the final destination. It will be a real adventure! You will see how powerful and exciting it is to move closer to that final destination when you are the one doing it!
Once you start seeing the first milestones achieved, this will also be a time to celebrate (in the way that is meaningful to you). Celebrating these milestones allows you to realise and acknowledge your progress and motivate you to step on the accelerator.
After having finished our journey you will be ready to hop onto the next one all by yourself 🙂 but if you want or need a coach I will be there
