Creativity
Using that part of the brain that is in charge of creativity, arts, images, language, it allows us to see things in a new different way. It opens up a world of possibilities where you can visualize you purpose and start playing with images and possibilities to turn it into a specific goal. In this part of the process the client will start to create new structures that empower him, using his own creative instinct, being supported by the coach, that will help him let go of the old ones that were not being helpful any more, and replace them with the new ones. By acknowledging the structure(s) that the client has created, he might also be able to learn from his past experiences, be more aware, more open to new different possibilities that he had never found himself considering, and move forward to his goal, als at the same time, creating an environment that empowers him. In the process of creating new structures and possibilities, we might ask the client:
To achieve your purpose, come to a solution or improve your quality of life, you will have had to do some hard work. Depending on the client and what is best for him, we as coaches choose different approaches or power tools to help the client along the way; this might be through having the client write down his values, design his purpose, create some new possibilities and short term goals to finally achieve his “big goal”, use his own creativity to plan positive actions and write down his own rules of living well, to support him daily. That’s when the client will see that the focus he had before coming into coaching is completely different than the one he now has.
Meditation and visualization are two very powerful tools to support the client, but is always good to ask them how you can support them better. Help the client think big, see the whole picture so they can find new ideas, new possibilities, different new ways to approach what bothers them or complicates them. All limitations and fears of the client must be worked through; as coaches is very important to pay attention to their body language, their rhythm in the session, to see how they are being comforted by what is being said or uncovered. Then empower, acknowledge and enthuse your client into knowing their purpose when they will be ready to go there, let them know that it is only fear that can stop them into reaching their goal.
Re-framing Perspective
I once heard myself being told to look around my reality, choose what was dis-empowering me and what was instead empowering, and at the same time, to see what was missing. That was the first time I really began a process of re-framing my perspectives about life, myself and my every day. This is that part of the process that is very much easier to be said than done; we are here telling the client to see into his actions, his values, his feelings and his deeper view of life itself and himself in it, and to re-frame what is negative and dis-empowering and pulling him back, when he should be moving forward.
To choose to change, and re-frame perspectives that are hurtful, negative or dis-empowering is tough because it means that we are about to start fighting with our own beliefs, maybe some of our values, we will have to make a choice between continuing to believe what has been taught to us since childhood, but doesn’t let us shine, or to make new beliefs, to see different perspectives, to outgrow our deepest fears, and reinvent ourselves in a way that feels right. In the coaching process, the most important thing, for us as coaches, is to keep the client focused on moving forward and letting go of the past so that he can find a better solution and reach for his goal.
