Many people, for one reason or another, give up on their passions in life. Considering that we have just one life to live, how can anyone give up on that which is truly, internally meaningful to them?
Life is not easy, but people need to remember that they are going to die. Why? So that life can be lived to the fullest. Why squander time ignoring this inevitability? To pretend otherwise would be absurd!
The absurd is born out of this confrontation between the need and the unreasonable silence of the world. – Albert Camus
Given that each of us is going to cease to exist, what are we supposed with all of the possible despair that might stem from the realisation that life is… meaningless?
The answer… whatever you want!
This highlights the reality that meaning is actually something each of us gives to our own lives, rather than finds out in the world and adopts as their own.
Freedom allows us to be authentic, unburdened by an externally derive senses of purpose, and instead be motivated by what is naturally, intrinsically meaningful.
Can you imagine being on your death bed having lived a life of anything less than this?
Are meaning & purpose really different things?
Instead of worrying about what other people think, imagine what living your life would be like if you were doing exactly what you wanted to do!
Life is made to be LIVED and lived by your set of rules as to what is meaningful or not, instead of simply adopting other people’s ideas and calling them your own when they do not feel like your own! Do you tell yourself that you would rather focus on “happiness” and “an easy life” and avoid discomfort and anxiety? We live in a world that prizes external measures of success in order to judge a life well-lived. There is no score provided to you in death, no “Good Job!” They only way to evaluate that you have lived a good life is if you feel that you have lived a life that feels meaningful! People can win at the game of life when they know the rules, and the most important rule is that there is nothing to win. What if our purpose was to be a human participant in the evolutionary processes of life on Earth, and indeed, the Universe? That is definitely being part of something bigger than just ourselves!
Connection
Interpretations are made through the lens of meaning-making – that is why two people can look at the same situation and have two distinct opinions about it.
Living a life based on our own internal sense of meaning does not mean that we do not have a responsibility to rest of mankind, and indeed the planet. Biologically, human beings are interdependent on one another and Nature designed us to work together. This is part of the reason why it “feels good” when you help someone – because our brains give us a shot of dopamine as a reward.
It is our interdependence that has made human the dominant species on the planet. Our ability to adopt and share our thoughts, feelings, and beliefs with others allows for the emergence of human concepts such as the rule of law, which mediates how people interact. We have economies using money instead of barter, which requires a huge amount of trust. In our companies, we use shared missions and visions to help us work together on something.
This shows that so much of what we mediate our lives with exists intangibly in each of our minds. The relational aspects of our humanity, which are crucial to our survival and development, take place within this “imaginary space between each of us”- a notion called inter-subjectivity. This space is critical for coaching because it is where our lives with others, social interactions, and relational dynamics all take place.
Being Human
Vverra, eu consectetur augue dignissim. Nullam mattis elit felis, eu viverra dolor scelerisque We are locked in a Darwinian nec. Sed blandit pretium turpis et struggle of individuals in the maximus. Vverra, eu consectetur nature’s game of survival of the augue dignissim. fittest, but we are enabled to view life’s dilemmas in terms other than strictly zero-sum.
Because humans are unique in that they are AWARE of their own existence, and not simply operating on instincts like every other species on the planet, this does not change the fact that we evolved with many of the same characteristics of other animals – to be born, develop, compete for resources, avoid be killed, transmit our genes onward.
On top of this basic template of life is our humanity which defines the confines of how our species uniquely plays is fundamental game. To know, and indeed embrace, our humanity for exactly what it is, in spite of all that is unfair, scary, glorious, bewildering, and wonderful with regard to existence, is what the Ontic Group believes is the best possible basis from which to not only achieve your goals, but to the create the goals themselves.
Humans often make systematic errors when they are trying to make important decisions, especially where there is a great deal of uncertainty and/or risk. These are called cognitive biases.
When people think about the future outcome of a something risky, there is often a tendency to “catastrophise” and imagine only the worst possible outcomes. Even when they know that “things are never as bad as they might seem!”

People are embodied, which means that they live within the constraints and opportunities of being human. Each of us has been literally thrown into an existence – at the mercy of our genetics endowed to us at birth and the luck of where and to whom we are born.
