A Coaching Model Created by Jennifer Gastelum
(Exercise and Fitness Coach, UNITED STATES)
My coaching model for exercise and fitness has been built upon a foundation for working with clients who want to make changes in their lives but have struggled with making these changes in their past.
Discovery
In this phase the coach and the client get to know each other and build rapport. The coaching process is explained and the client decides if they would like to take part in the process.
Also during this time the coach is searching for the client’s strengths and weaknesses. This will come in valuable during the following sessions.
Set Goals
During this process the coach and the client will work together to establish what goals the client wants to achieve. This entails getting the client to describe the “big picture” of what they would like to achieve during the coaching process.
Also during this process the team will start breaking down the large goal into smaller, more achievable goals.
Motivate/Accountability
During this time the coach will work with the client to make sure they are on the right path. They will need to help motivate the client and also acknowledge them for their achievements.
If the client is not moving forward, then some gentle challenging may be necessary or exploration as to the lack of movement. It might be possible that the goals need to be re-evaluated and move back into the Set Goals phase.
Action
During this phase the hard work is being done and the client is working toward achieving their goals. The coach should praise the client for any achievements and help them keep moving forward. Also during this phase the coach should be working with the client on self management and how they will sustain their achievements past the time they will be done working with their coach.
During this stage the entire coaching process should be reviewed to see if they are achieving their goals or if they need to be re-considered. Also during this phase additional goals may be added.
After completion of this phase either the coaching process is complete or the client can decide to develop a new set of goals and start the process over again.
I believe that at any phase a client may move forward to the next or may move backward to address any issues that have arisen. Even with multiple goals the client may be in different phases all within the same coaching session. The ultimate success for a client would be that they are continually moving forward toward their end goal.
