A Coaching Model By Zipporah Ongwenyi, Life Coach, KENYA
HEAL Definition
Dictionary.com offers three possible definitions for ‘heal’. The first is “cause (a wound, injury, or person) to become sound or healthy again, i.e., cure”; the second is “become sound or healthy again, i.e., get better, recover, or mend; and the third is “alleviate (a person’s distress or anguish).
All three definitions point towards getting better. Coaching clients will most often be seeking help because they feel disjointed in one or more aspects of life. They will be wanting to bring back to themselves a feeling of balance and alleviate whatever is bringing them anguish.
My purpose as a coach is to offer a space for my clients to share openly and deeply without feeling judged. As an intuitive and empathetic person who loves to listen, I bring to coaching a true passion for helping clients walk their journey towards healing.
My coaching model will seek to walk clients through a process that thoughtfully helps them alleviate their distress. Some of the tools I will use as part of my model will be a wheel of life, strengths finder, and Flip-It.
My Coaching Model: HEAL
My coaching model will employ a four-step process that essentially starts from disempowerment (unwellness) and works towards empowerment (healing).
H– Hear
The first step will be to actively listen to the client. To do this I will create a safe environment of trust and invite the client to share the issue. At this stage, I will work with the client to get to the real issue through the use of powerful questions. I will allow adequate time for the client to talk about what it is that is disturbing their balance. I will also be setting up the coaching agreement.
E-Express
This gives the client space to let out all the thoughts that pertain to the issue or issue that has been identified. Allowing them space to lay out many of the thoughts, fears, anxieties, and so on that, they have about the issues. Expressing themselves adequately ensures that they have poured out all the limiting emotions and beliefs, and more importantly have been able to truly speak to how they feel without defending it. Constantly asking the client ‘what else?’ will be one way to ensure that they pour it all out.
A-Alternative
I will guide the client to consider alternatives to all the frustrations they might have expressed. In these sessions, I will innovate with the ICA flip-tool in various ways and walk with the client to help them towards identifying different points of view and perspectives that are enabling, and which shift them from that place of ‘unwell’.
L-Live
What does living your life mean? What do you see as your best life when you free yourself to live it? The client, having identified alternatives will now be invited to envision how to live well through articulating various ways that this could be achieved in practical daily life, and allowing space for constant adjustment as may be necessary, to ensure that their plans and actions are practicable in their own lives, and enable for forwarding movement.
