A Coaching Model Created by Enma Popli
(Executive Coach, INDIA)
Setting
I am a global traveler and have also lived the life of an expatriate for several years. I have learnt to adapt to new cultures and lifestyles. The journey has been challenging and at the same time extremely exciting and educative, giving me significant exposure.
This exposure to the global environment made me understand that to be successful today, while competence and qualifications are a given, one must also exhibit confidence, have excellent communication skills and be culturally sensitive.
Another awareness I had was that people around me tended to confide in me, seeking me out, wanting to share their troubles or worries to try and find solutions. When I explored this the response I got was that the listening ear and generally positive response I gave them made them feel comfortable and had a positive effect on them.
This awareness and my training as a Human Resource Management professional inspired
me to take up the profession of a soft skills trainer and as I evolved, that of an executive
coach.
Over the years, I have trained professionals from different roles, educational profiles and cultures. The training objectives were wide-ranging from confidence building and interpersonal skills to cultural sensitivity, teamwork and more.
My Coaching Model – Believe
I believe that with the right mentoring, support and encouragement coupled with their own commitment, people can succeed at anything they desire to do. This has helped me create my coaching model – BELIEVE!

Build Rapport
Trust and Rapport are critical to a successful coaching outcome. When I begin the coaching journey with my Client, I believe it is important that my Client trusts me and shares thoughts with me without hesitation. As trust is a two-way street, if need be I will initiate this building of trust by sharing my own experiences with my Client to ensure a good rapport.I believe that with the right mentoring, support and encouragement coupled with their own commitment, people can succeed at anything they desire to do. This has helped me create my coaching model – BELIEVE!
Explore
Once we share a good rapport, I can support my Client to explore underlying beliefs and help create awareness by asking powerful questions. If I feel there is a need, I will invite my Client to use visualisation (so that the impossible can seem possible and compelling) and the wheel of life to help identify where my client is and what my client would like to work on.
GoaLs
Having identified what my Client would like to work on, it is important to establish goals that my Client owns and commits to. The Goal will also help my Client to get from where my Client is to where my Client wants to be in the future.
As a coach, I also encourage Clients to reward themselves as they make progress towards the goals they have set for themselves.
Insight
Having explored and identified outcomes and goals, I would then help Clients gain an insight into their strengths. I believe playing to one’s strength enhances confidence and increases motivation to achieve one’s goals. I would invite my client to use tools like ‘strength finder’ and ‘DISC’ and then support my Client to focus on development areas.
Enable
Having reached a new level of self-awareness and established goals, if my Client needs help in developing a specific skill, I will offer my services as a trainer and if my Client accepts, I will enable and support my Client to develop and enhance that skill.
Validate
As our coaching journey progresses, I will invite my Client to reflect on the journey so far so that my Client can validate that he/she is moving towards the goals earlier identified and the goals remain unchanged. This, I believe, will build greater commitment to the actions needed for achievement of the goals.
Encourage
I believe that continuous and consistent encouragement is critical part of the coaching journey. The fact that my Client has sought the support of a coach means there is some underlying uncertainty in the mind of my Client. Once a goal and journey has been set, I will encourage my Client to continue down the decided path till the achievement of his or her goals.
