A Coaching Model Created by Daniel Bass
(Executive Coach, CHINA)
Coaching, to me, is something that should become deeply rooted and should have an impact upon who you are, like the coding of the DNA. Also, coaching is about you discovering what is already inside you, again like your DNA. That is why my coaching model is DNA:
DNA is the simple three step model of coaching – from first meeting and determining the direction desired in Discovery to next working towards your goals in Navigation to finally coming up with a plan to implement in the last step, Action.
D: Discovery
The start of every journey begins with Discovery. Who are the people on the journey? Where do we want to go? Discovery covers introductions and expectation setting, as well as determining the direction for the coaching session. The direction is always set by the coachee – they are always in control, the coach is there only to help them reach their destination, to achieve their goal.
N: Navigation
After clear direction is set, we next move to Navigation. This is where the real work begins, and again the coachee is in control. The coach here provides support and assistance, but the coachee is always in the driving seat. Here is where exploration happens, where the coachee is guided to deep introspection and to create more awareness about themselves, to gain clarity. This naturally leads to the final step…
A: Action
Once the direction is clear and there is clarity around how to get to the goal, the output is Action. Specifically, the coachee comes up with an action plan specific to their goal. It is the “how”, it is the implementation of ideas that come up from each coaching session.
