Context setting –
|
Use a standard script to brief the client about Coaching (versus mentoring and counselling), confidentiality, ICF ethics and duration of the session. This ensures that we cover all elements of context setting. It is important to check if the client has any queries and answer them to the client’s satisfaction. These first two steps is what I refer to as Contracting.
Then, gently ask the client to share any recent win. Acknowledge the client liberally for the win. This provides an opportunity to celebrate and create a bond with the client. It creates a positive energy right at the start. |

Explore Issues |
The stage is now set for the client to share the issue. The client may describe the issue or sometimes the symptons. Actively listen and ask powerful questions to explore the underlying issue(s). Use paraphrasing to get clarity around the underlying issue. Acknowledge the client liberally for observed behaviours for e.g. honesty, courage to share the issue etc.
This process of questioning and clarifying creates an awareness within the client. Watch out for the body language and gauge the awareness building. Acknowledge the progress made at every step. The client’s subsconscious mind is constantly at work and duirng the coaching (process of listening, questioning and clarifying), it transforms awareness into an insight. Look out for changes in the body language, rate of speech which will help you gauge when an insight dawns on the client. |

Explore Solutions and |
Tap this insight and explore various options and solutions. This can be a rapid brainstorming session or a discussion of options. Acknowledge the client’s insight and help them design solutions and actions.
Flow smoothly into action planning. Coaching is all about taking action, and this is a key step to create a real change in the client’s life. The action plan will be at the pace and rate which the client wishes to proceed. Use SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realsitic and timebound) or similar framework to design an action plan. Check the client’s commitment level to the action plan. |

Reassure Help create Structure for support and accountability & thank the client |
Constantly reassure and encourage the client .
Help create a structure that will aid the client to get the required support and generates accountability within the client. This could be a time management structure or an accountability structure or a support structure that will help the client gain self confidence. Offer your support and agree the details of support you will provide, should the client request support from you. Finally, acknowledge, celebrate and thank the client. |
