A Coaching Model Created by Alex Stewart
(Career Coaching, AUSTRALIA)
As a career coach my model is guided by offering an objective solution for those in the workplace; a coaching space to come to, to get clarity and insight into work-based issues through the ‘back and forth’ process of time -honoured coaching techniques.
I see the model as a filter that the coach can hear and listen through with intent for and of the client and then through powerful questions begin a process of creating a space for the client to gain clarity of purpose for the goals he/she wants to achieve.
I am an empathetic sounding board for the client filtering the concerns back to the client offering options and perspectives that continue to foster increased understanding and clarity about the next best steps to take.
Further support is offered when the client is clear and purposeful to assist the client at a future date when needed.
Please notice in figure 1 that the traditional figures outlined down the side of the page are The Boss, The Family and the The Friend. The client has often been strongly influenced by one or more of these sources and is now looking for someone independent of office politics and family and of even a good friend, to assist him/her to get clarity on the issues that are of concern.
The idea of the filtering system came to me in a conversation with another Coach as a way to look at clarity. The client is wholly responsible for the results of the coaching process – the coach cannot do the work for the client – it is the coach’s (my) responsibility to set the stage, to partner with the client to assist him/her to gain insight, hold him/her accountable for agreements made to take action and to then offer support as future plans unfold.
