Coaching Case Study By Suh Yien Chee
(Career Coach, SINGAPORE)
1) Who are the main players in this case study
The coachee, Rainny (not her real name), is a British profession who recently started her own business as a career coach. She had left her corporate life after having no career progress nor was her contributions been positively regarded by the company. She decided to be her own boss because she is tired of joining companies that does not resonate with her values in terms of work and staff supports; and so that she can explore few areas of interests with the new skills she acquired.
After much efforts and some networking, she was offered an interview through an old contact with a company that she had worked with on numerous occasions throughout her corporate life. The company is a very established one with long standing in the economy. Her work with them back then had allowed her to have a good idea of their service and the ways they handled matters, as such, she felt their values resonates with hers. This is also the period she is at the last stage of her coach certification, as such, the amount of work and anxiety level are on the high side.
2) What is the core problem or challenge you applied your coaching skills to?
Rainny request for support to walk with her through her anxieties during this period.
For our sessions, we worked through her doubts of being good enough for the company, some questions she might encounter for the upcoming interview, her stresses of starting her business amidst completing the final stages of her coach assessments which she is also anxious of meeting the grades; and finally, gratitude and self care.
3) Coaching – Empathy, Reframing Perspectives, Gratitude & Celebrations, Self Care
First and foremost, I demonstrated support with empathy to her anxieties and acknowledged her journey. Next, I worked with her to identify from her sharing the achievements she had actually made thus far. This helped to re-frame her perspective to how far she had come and how well she has been doing; as opposed to what else she has not done which resulted in a ‘lacking’ sense. Next, we worked to re-frame Rainny’s waiting period’s a time to rest and to catch up oneself care before the next leg of action takings rather than a negative time of ‘nothing-seems-to-be-moving’.And lastly, I have her put in plan how and when she is going to act on her celebration and self care.
Action Plans and When
I have Rainny to use the time spent with me to work on the self care plans. It is noted that she had unconsciously been thinking about it however, lack the time and/or neglect to put into concrete plan and actions. Here are the plans devised during our session:
Feedback from Coachee
Rainny feedback that the process of our sessionshelpedideas to occur as well as to come up with action plan with timing on areas she had neglected for very long. It has also helped her to become aware of her achievements and thatgive her the confidence to establish contacts with other companies to promote her service.
Concluding
In life, as we pursue our goals, it is common that we get busy looking at what we had not done so that we can attempt to do better and to achieve more. However, that get us looking at what is wrong which eventually also get us worrying about our future. We neglect to realize and acknowledge that we had indeed already achieved something. This is not to say that we will start to lax and eventually fail to move ahead, but rather to acknowledge our efforts having come this far. This is a form of self affirmations as well as seeing at which stage we are at towards our goal/s. Last by not least, having someone to talk such matters through allows one to gain different perspectives and feel supported.
