Background
The two characters in this case study, Sara (name Changed), mother of Aakash. Sara is working in reputed firm as a senior professional. Her elder son Aakash is a talented cricketer and playing cricket from the age of 8 who is now 16 years old. Throughout his school life he was playing cricket at various levels including international level. He also was trained in UK, Australia & Srilanka by some accredited coaches. He was able to balance his needs of school and had ensured he would get reasonable good grades as he progressed in his school life. As he was entering his crucial period of X grade, he decided to pursue IGCSE Cambridge syllabus and that help him to balance his school and cricket. As he entered his teenage years, the normal tendency to do things independently grew more and this would sometimes make mother very uncomfortable and panicky. As she was not sure that he was doing it right way or would it get same results as expected. There would be constant pressure to manage her son and control his actions and movements.
Aakash was a very open child with lot of patience to talk & discuss and also he shared very open relationship with his mother. His close proximity to sports from child had taught him a lesson to rise up after every failure. This was very helpful when he turned to a young man where the degree of risk taking is high. In spite that mother had trouble to manage the insecurities in her that if she lets him to do things as he wanted he will lose him or he may fail or he may fall in wrong hands. This brought lot of anxiety and stress to mother and in-turn this affected her actions to son.
Client Brief
Sara was facing stress that her son did not like her interventions and she needed to do something that can help both. Sara meets her coach Ram and explains her situation and feels that she has to improve her relationship with her son in all ways.
Sara starts explaining her close relationship she shares with her teenage son, Aakash. She states all her fear; insecurity related to her actions is causing no benefit to her son. In contrast Aakash feels that his mother has no trust in him and she is constantly watching all his actions. He is very uncomfortable. Everyday there is constant arguments and emotions.
Aakash has an open discussion with his mother and explains that he really loves her and understands her feelings. He feels that he is a responsible teenage boy who travels independently and manages his affairs in cricket and studies, so he feels he can do a fair job in managing his affairs when his mother is not around. Both of them are constantly talk and sharing their views.
