Coaching Case Study By Lori Moen

Client – Ana
Coach – Lori
Session Topic
Client wants to explore what she perceives as beyond normal levels of upsetness when she feels she is wasting money. She expressed a successful outcome would be to be in more control of her emotions when money is wasted.
Used Powerful questions asking her to share the importance about feeling in control of her emotions. She shared that the feelings that arise are annoyance, frustration, disappointed as she reacts so emotionally to the waste whether it is a large amount or a small amount and also expressed self-blame for doing “stupid” things. When she finds herself in the situation it stacks on top of previous times when money was wasted and then also when other things were wasted whether it time or items.
Continued with powerful questions relating the reactions to the different situations of wasting money and wasting time – as this highlighted her feelings of always being in control with her time management – her work – she expressed if she was a little bit more laid back with everything in life she could better deal with wasting stuff.
Had the client suspend the idea of always being in control – to discover what might be possible. Led her to discover the idea of shared accountability that not all things are her responsibility and that it is not always her fault when time – money or items are wasted. She came to the realization that while she still feels a need to be in control she is responsible for how she reacts and that if she realizes there is shared accountability that will also allow her to trust the people around her. She discovered it’s important to trust that other people can help.
At the end of the coaching session she felt quite a bit lighter realizing that she is not 100% responsible for everything that there is shared responsibility and realizing this provided the direction on being aware of her reactions and the emotions around them.
From this coaching session I learned to tune-in closely to key words that were being used and to highlight them for definition. I keyed in on the changes in her voice and energy and shared those observations as that provided some clarification for her. The session was productive based on the feedback from the client – it would have been even more effective if an action plan had been discussed for triggers when wasteful situations arise in the future.
