Coaching Case Study By Lay Kiaw Tan
(Career Coach, SINGAPORE)
Roland (not his real name) was recently given an opportunity to present a proposal to conduct a team workshop to a SME (small medium size) company. This is his first business deal since he set up his company recently and his friend referred him to this organisation. Roland was concern and worried about this project and wanted to be coach on some uncertainties and challenges.
Employing Active Listening &Powerful Questioning skills, I had help him to overcome the concerns and some challenges, propel him to take appropriate actions to prepare for the presentation.
Roland started with a concern and challenges in mind and being new in the coaching and training arena, he was worried that the lack of experience and may hinder his confidence to present and conduct a workshop for this SME company. He expressed he has some experienced in conducting training with a structure and guidelines provided in his previous workplace. He continued to mention that what he had in mind and what to do in the workshop but lacking confidence in conducting it.
What’s the difference in the methodology between his previous training and the forthcoming workshop?
He realise that the presentation methodology is similar except content and in this case there isn’t an issue and he can leverage on his past experience in conducting the workshop and fit in his program content to start with. This awareness gave Roland the confidence and committed to put things in place for the training.
Another issue was, Roland felt perplexed as he has not clock any creditable training hours or received any testimonial to support his profession and the uncertainty as what the SME Boss will ask during the presentation and how to manage his expectation. Why do they want to engage his services?
What’s his Coaching &Training Values and how can his workshop add values to the company?
Roland started to talk about his bio and what his “WIZARD” pathway to success means and through these explanation, he started to have more ideas and further add more “insight” of his company values and visualise what are the values to add on and the JOURNEY to create transformation in this SME company! So excited about the discovery and gain confidence as what and how to present to the SME Boss. He is committed to refine the values within these 2 days and share with his friends.
To prepare himself well, he intended to seek for help from his friends in preparing possible questions that could raise up during the presentation and also dwell into his asking himself possible questions with regards to the features and benefits of his workshop.
The coaching session was good experience for me to learn to be presence at all times to feel with Roland’s concern and challenges and also applying good listening skills and powerful questioning I have managed to create higher awareness of his strength and capabilities. This was key to help Roland to move forward with confidence and energy and propel into action to prepare for the presentation.
