I wanted to delve more deeply into the subject of risk as I looked at it in my Power Tool. The interview with Alyssa Mullet, a Certified Professional Coach and SHRM-CP, is captured in the transcript that follows. Alyssa assists me in researching the advantages of taking risks and the most effective ways to motivate clients to do so. In this interview, I have discovered that managing risk is a crucial aspect of coaching. We must take chances if we want to live rich lives. We must assist our clients in discovering their values if we are to assist them in navigating the vulnerability of risk. We can help them analyze the fear, values, and trust components to determine whether the risk is worthwhile.

I have a client who is a woman in her mid-20s and the mother of two young children. She recently completed an online GED course through a nearby community college. We discussed her expectations for the coaching session during our initial meeting and decided to work towards the outcome she wanted. Her objective was to stay with the company, speak with her supervisor about this, and ideally move into a position that was more compatible while avoiding upsetting those who had helped her advance professionally by recognizing her and giving her promotions in the past. After I introduced her to my power tool, Passivity vs. Confrontation, she was able to change the way she thought about how to approach her manager by guiding her to examine her current thinking and adopt a new way of thinking.

Using the Power Tool Risk vs. Benefit, one can gauge a client’s level of anxiety when facing a challenging choice. The client can evaluate the benefit after determining how much they fear the risk. I came to the realization that I could determine how frightening a risk was if I could quantify it while receiving peer coaching. I decided to rate the risk on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 representing the lowest risk and 10 the highest. It was less frightful if the risk was a 2, but terrifying if it was a 10. This idea is not to say that taking the risk should be avoided, just that it may require more consideration and analysis.
