In the competitive societies we live in, there is not only a tendency to want to do everything but to do it perfectly. Having momentum can be a wonderful feeling but it is not a fixed state. The other end of the pendulum can be described as operating in a state of lethargy. At an emotional, mental, and/or physical low. Similar to momentum, feeling lethargic does not have to last forever. This power tool, Momentum vs. Lethargy helps Psychological Momentum (PM) plays a key role in goal pursuit and achievement. Research suggests that the main psychological processes that underpin momentum are confidence, perceived competence (self-belief), and internal attributions (e.g. personal skill).

The Phoenix – the eagle-like bird who dies in flames and get reborn from its ashes – is a powerful symbol that continues to inspire writers (e.g., Fawkes, the Phoenix created by J.K Rowling as Dumbledore’s trustee companion) and artists in general across generations and cultures, as well as politicians (e.g., San Francisco added the Phoenix to its flag after the earthquake of 1906 as a symbol of the reconstruction of the city) and marketers. From the very beginning of my journey as a coach, I’ve felt that this symbol helps understand and describe what happens when someone engages in a coaching process.

In the Overcoming Fear Using Coaching profession, it is crucial to understand that fear is based on the brain’s response to a real or perceived threat. Often, this threat arises in those with a fixed mindset with a predisposition to assume that they will fail. By reducing stress through a growth mindset and being aware of systematic desensitization to break down goals and fears into manageable steps, people may then be able to face their fears and gradually achieve their goals.

Before I started the International Coach Academy program, I never thought of myself as a perfectionist. However, as I began being coached, the sessions always circled back to perfectionism. I was burning out, unable to be satisfied with my accomplishments or enjoy the journey. I felt stressed out and as if I was failing continually. The focus on perfection in every area of my life was forcing me to miss out on the beauty of the present and eventually my mental and physical health deteriorated. As I began to research and use techniques to overcome my perfectionistic tendencies, I also began coaching others with the same issue. I chose this power tool Perfectionism vs. Self-Compassion because it has helped me personally and can help others who deal with the same perfectionistic tendencies.
