Who are you being?
The Be Do Have Mentality: A 3 step process to reaching your goals and finding the joy in living
I Am..
An artist, a wife, a daughter, and a coach for powerful living. My joy comes from the creative process. I have many strengths but my weakness use to be managing my time and making sure my needs were met. The problem wasn’t what do I want?
it was working through a “have, do, be” process that wasn’t working. Most of us feel that if we only had that job, the money, the time, etc. then we could take action in order to become what we desire to be: successful, fulfilled, and happy. The obstacle I see in this is working from a place of lack. When we feel we aren’t good enough or we don’t have what we need, we are being less than. I offer a different method:
The Be Do Have Mentality.
For those creatives who prefer living the surreal dream life of the creative feeling spirit, here is the model I’d love to share with you.
Ask Yourself: Who am I being?
Being: definition- Existence; the nature or essence of a person; having one’s state, nature, quality, or role specified.
When does your life feel truly lived? I believe it is in this present moment, for this moment is all we have. Past is present and the future never comes. When we are out of the moment we are out of alignment with our values and truth; we are not living at all, we are running on the default setting of life. I suggest the best way to come back to the present moment is to find empowerment in this moment. By asking, who am I being?
we can create space around the current obstacle to look inside of us to identify the energy we are creating and putting out into our environment which is them coming back to us in the form of relationships and circumstance.
Example: A woman desperately wants to find a partner. She decides that the only way she can be satisfied is if she finds a man who loves her, they build a family, and live happily ever after. So she goes into the world looking for this man all the while feeling that if she doesn’t find him there is no hope. The dating scene is not working for her. The men aren’t good enough. Dead-end. The woman discovers that her way of being is one that says, I am not happy. I am incomplete.
The men she dates can never complete the picture she has of herself. She decides to turn it around. Her way of being shifts into one that says, I am whole complete and perfect in my own way. I don’t need a man to show me that.
Men come knocking at her door in droves.
Ok, this story may sound slightly exaggerated, but the essence of the story is clear. It is only when we are conscious of who we are being that we can see where the roadblocks lie and how we can begin to move them.
After we practice these steps together, you will find yourself being more productive as denial and neglect dissolve in the light of your power and authority.
3 Step Process
- Identify What You Are Committed To: When we identify our goals and bring to it many specific descriptors we can create a strong intention, and begin to see possibilities for ways of being.
- Create Who You Want To Be: Before we can take action, we must decide who will take the action. What are the possible ways of being that are in alignment with what you are committed to achieving?
- Visualize and Take Action: Once the new way of being has been created, possible courses of action begin to occur to us and we are powerfully called into action propelling us into the future and to manifesting our goals.
Your Time is Now
Along the way, old patterns of ways of being will show themselves and as they do we will ask “who was I being?” and we will clearly see how the old way of being was not centered on what we are committed to now. Coming back to the present and always looking for new possible ways of being brings more aliveness into this moment. If you want to experience more joy and wonder in your life without the constriction of itineraries, now is your time. This moment is all we have. Together we can make the most of it.
The Benefits of Healthy Living
The monetary benefits of adding regular physical activity to oneʼs daily life are astounding. Americans stand to save on average an estimated $1400 a year in medical costs by simply scheduling exercise into their day to day lives (Blackburn, 2011). The benefits do not end there however. New research done by Dr. Beth Levine of Howard Hughes Medical Institute at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical center in Dallas published in the January, 2011 issue of Nature suggests the ability of exercise to speed up the removal of waste from inside the bodyʼs cells may be its most substantial. Cells accumulate waste called flotsam from everyday wear and tear. Broken proteins, shreds of cellular membranes, viruses, bacteria, and aged mitochondria (organelles within cells that produce energy) constitute flotsam inside the cell (Reynolds, 2012). Most of the time the body cleans up the flotsam and reuses it for fuel through a process called autophagy.
Autophagy happens when cells create specialized membranes that clean up the flotsam and takes it to the lysosome within the cell where it is burned for energy. Without autophagy, cells become overwhelmed by the waste and malfunction or die developing disease within the body such as diabetes and cancer. The research that Dr. Levine has done shows that autophagy increases when the bodyʼs cells experience physiological stress or exercise (Reynolds, 2012). The very building blocks of the body cannot function properly without regular physical activity.
The Mayo Clinic has a list of seven additional benefits of regular physical activity: exercise controls weight, combats health conditions and disease, improves mood, boosts energy, promotes better sleep, improves oneʼs sex life, and it produces fun (Mayo Clinic, 2011)! Federal guidelines suggest a minimum of 150 minutes of moderate to vigorous exercise plus two days of full-body strengthening each week. And yet, more that 25% of Americans do not exercise on a regular or consistent basis. Some say co-active or lifestyle fitness coaching, the hybrid of traditional life coaching, spiritual coaching, and fitness training, could be the key to assisting individuals in taking control of their health and achieving their life goals simultaneously.
