A Conception of the Evolution of the Coaching Journey
Model Overview
When we examine our lives, we find that one of the universal themes in every person’s life, no matter where he/she lives, his/her background or circumstance; all of our lives are marked by milestones. Those are events that define our lives, or turning points that our lives have taken at one point or another.
And so this model derives it self from the same concept. The coaching relationship is defined by milestones. Those are the identifying points that both coachee and coach reach together.
Step One
In the first step of the Milestones Coaching Model, the coach and client work together to establish rapport and a trusting relationship to help them move forward. Also during this stage, the coach helps the client better understand the nature of the coaching relationship, what coaching is, and what it is NOT. This step sets the stage for a trusting environment, and a fruitful coaching relationship.
Step Two
Moving on from the first milestone, aka step one, the client and coach now enter the next step. This is where the client establishes his/her goals, aspirations and objectives. After determining these goals, the client then commits to making a change or moving towards these aspirations. Also the client defines the ways, steps and explores the various methods that will facilitate reaching those goals.
Through out all of this, the coach hold the client accountable, in ways that will help the client move forward and achieve those aspirations.
Step Three
After the client has established his/her goals and started working towards those goals, the coach will help the client assess those steps. Are those steps working or not, is the client able to move forward. Here the coach will examine if the client is stuck or is unable to move forward. This step helps the client challenge his/her ways in life, try things differently, utilize new and original ways of thinking. During this stage the client challenges his/her perceptions, beliefs, thoughts, and actions. The coach will help the client to truly define what these goals mean in regards to the client’s life.
