A Coaching Model Created by Rahul Bhatnagar
(Executive Coach, INDIA)
Here is my coaching model ACHARYA. The word ACHARYA resonates with me and my coaching. Acharya is a ‘Sanskrit’ word and one of its meaning is –
The one who walks together, on a progressive journey.
This word ‘ACHARYA’ supports the way ICF describes coaching – As partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.
My coaching model ACHARYA aligns with GROW model and maps well with ICF competencies.
ACHARYA
A – Aim
The client describes what is his/her AIM? What is the outcome or goal client is expecting with coaching interaction? This is vital to understand the expectations in the beginning and set the tone, where coach walks with the coachee as an integral part of his/her progressive journey. Coach asks the questions to explore how the future looks like and how do we know that we have reached to our destination. Client takes the responsibility of his/her commitment and end results.
ICF competencies – Coaching presence, Coaching agreement, Establishing trust, Meeting ethical guidelines
C – Clarity about the reality
Client talks about the current situation, clarifies current realities. Where does he/she stand today in relation to his/her aim (goal). What is important in the current situation for the client? And how do we move forward from here? Coach listens actively and clarifies without becoming judgmental.
ICF competencies – Active listening, Direct Communication
HA – Holistic Approach
This is important and pragmatic to take a holistic approach and not a skewed unidirectional path. Explore all the options available. Coach supports in setting the big picture, encompassing the various aspects of life and at the same time keeps focus on the client’s context and goals.
ICF competencies – Creating awareness, Powerful questioning, Direct communication
RY – Reflect and reframe Yourself
Now it is time to reflect on the aim, reality and the approach. As the exploration happens and new realities gets surfaced it may need reframing and re-tuning. As the underlying issues and emotions start unearthing, client may discover something utterly new which may have impact on the journey and on the destination. Client reflect upon his/her values, believes, goals, corresponding action plan and commitment for the actions. Coach acknowledges client’s situation and his/her awareness and celebrates this new state of awareness.
ICF competencies – Powerful questioning, Direct communication, Designing actions, Creating structure
A – Action
Finally it is time to take action and execute the action plan. Client demonstrate his/her will and owns his/her actions to continue his/her progressive journey towards the goals. Coach and client continue to move forward, where coach supports client to remain focused on the goals and corresponding actions and client continue to take those actions. Coach acknowledges the progress and celebrate with client the wins on the way.
ICF competencies – Managing progress and accountability, I would like to continue my journey with my inner “ACHARY A”
