Introduction
What makes them different? I have been reading all about good leadership and great ideas on how to become a good leader. As sometimes we are not sure when we cross over from being a manager to a leader.
This power tool will help people to transform in their work and family relationships.
What is the difference?
Most of the people we meet, would aspire to be Managers and also not often people say “I want to be a Leader”. It may be because they interchangeable use it. l am very curious about this and felt if I can use this difference in my coaching application, we would bring some difference in approach in relationships to be improved among family members, peers, boss, subordinates. Manage is a good feeling of achievement applied with control; position. Are Management & leadership all about control? Is there any other factor, which makes them distinct?
Managing involves planning, controlling, implementing and execution. The manager is a key person who drives and is responsible for the work allocated. To get the work done, managers follow a management principle called “Control”. The teams are managed and controlled in the manner the results can be attained. One of HBR article quotes ”Counting value vs. Creating value. You’re probably counting value, not adding it, if you’re managing people….”
So what does Leaders do then? Leaders may or may not be directly involved in the work that is being driven. Leaders are not controlling but inspiring and directing the person to do their best to get the best results.
Just relate to so many Leaders across world, Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, they all give us picture of a great leader. They will inspire people around them. They believe each one has their abilities and they continue to empower to reach their best even when they have gone away.
In this belief system, it is self acknowledgement which can make people identify what matters to them also make them realize which value is getting threatened. They help in reinforcing their positive skills rather than negative flaws.
In his book “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There”, Marshall Goldsmith quotes “Natural Law”. This aspect is very interesting. He says that you cannot mandate synergy between team members, divisions; you cannot order people to change their thinking or behavior. The only law applies is Natural Law. He adds more that how can we make them aware that doing things this way will benefit them in some way, immediately or somewhere down the road. This means how to bring this awareness called “What’s in it for me”? In my coaching model Look INSIDE, I talk about it. . This force will drive people to do their best and overall bring positive reinforcement in their life.
