A Coaching Model created by Teresa Shaffer
(Executive Coaching, UNITED STATES)
Shaffer Executive Leadership Coaching model is developed for executives and managers in corporations. I specialize in women executives and managers.
My goal is to help leaders to incorporate the best of the feminine and masculine traits and more effectively lead the self, others and the business to achieve individual and organizational excellence.
The leader is at the center of the Shaffer Leadership Coaching model and encompasses 8 core areas of development: integrated life, emotional intelligence, values & purpose, communication, vision & strategy, head & heart, political savvy, and relationships.
It is important for the leader to gain a more complete view of oneself by focusing on the Whole Person and integrating all aspects of one’s life. I believe leadership develops from the inside – out and begins with a deep understanding of the self. A life grounded in self knowledge and seeing there is more than the day to day goals and routines will bring forth a deeper understanding and meaning to work and life.
By appreciating their wholeness as a human being, they can hold a vision of who and what they can become in their highest expression and more fully bring their talents to the organization to make a positive difference. Leaders can then make more conscious choices aligned with their value system and unleash their highest potential for greatness.
Shaffer Executive Coaching Leadership model is centered on the following 8 core areas of development:
Integrated Life:
The outer circle, Living an Integrated Life helps keep you grounded and true to your authentic self especially in a 24/7 work environment where you could work all the time.
When you seek to integrate the best of all parts of yourself, a great sense of well being occurs. The first step on the path to “wholeness” is to know who you are; what makes you happy; what do you want; what are your values, purpose, top priorities, and where you want to spend your time. Then, you can make the best choices on how to design the abundant career and life you desire.
Assembling a meaningful arrangement of all the different aspects of your life— career, family, friends, health, community and hobbies will fill your needs and fuel your passion.
Emotional Intelligence:
Elevating your Emotional Intelligence will improve your professional and personal effectiveness. You will achieve greater success as a leader with less stress and more ease. Emotionally Intelligent leaders also inspire others to achieve goals with confidence, enthusiasm and perform better overall.
Values and Purpose:
Aspiring to become your best as a leader starts with the work you do on the inside, identifying your values and purpose and what you stand for. This helps you lead yourself, others and organizations with greater purpose and authenticity.
Relationships:
Learn to more effectively build, foster and leverage your network to gain visibility and secure opportunities that can help you succeed. This includes your supervisor, colleagues, employees, teams, key stakeholders, mentors, sponsors, customers and advisors. It could also include people you haven’t met yet, but need to know.
Communication:
Enhance your communication skills to speak with more power, impact and influence and also learn the skills that women in particular need to have to navigate the male dominated business world.
Vision and Strategy:
There is skill to painting a compelling vision for the future and showing your team where the organization is going. You must also help teams to feel, see and experience how their dreams and goals fit into this bigger picture. By setting a vision, and inspiring and building confidence, then a leader can empower their people to form specific strategies, goals and a plan to make it all happen.
Head and Heart:
Often in the corporate world, mind, thinking and doing is dominant. My goal is to bring the head and the heart together in my coaching. It’s not just about what the person is doing but who they are becoming on their journey.
Encouraging leaders to develop more than one way to lead by balancing the head and heart in leadership—logic and kindness, strategy and compassion, thinking and feelings. This balance will invoke committed and meaningful actions. Behavior is influenced by what we feel and leading with the heart shows people you care— inspiring trust, unleashing potential, encouraging excellence and creating a high performance culture that achieves not only short and long term goals but sustainable organizations.
Political Savvy:
Empowering leaders to develop political savvy skills, so they can influence and leverage relationships, increase visibility and successfully navigate upper levels of the organization while maintaining their integrity. Both individuals and organizations will benefit from empowering leaders to learn and manage organizational politics.
The Shaffer Executive Coaching process includes 3 Phases:
Phase I:
Discovery:
Collect data to understand the situation fully and get a robust picture of a leader’s strengths, developmental areas, needs and goals. The data is custom to your situation and can be a client questionnaire, interviews with your supervisor, stakeholders, performance metrics, annual reviews, assessments, surveys and any other relevant information that surfaces in the coaching conversations.
Design:
Based on the data from the discovery process, we will integrate the assessment data with the client and organizational goals, and key performance metrics to measure success. We will co-design the Master Leadership Learning Plan which becomes your road map for the coaching engagement and success.
Phase 2:
Deploy Master Leadership Learning Plan:
This phase will bring a deeper self-awareness, self-observation and continuous improvement in the relationship between client and coach based on mutual respect, trust and freedom of expression. This phase entails the following:
Success is measured at three-month and six- month intervals.
Phase 3:
Results:
The Master Leadership Learning Plan is brought to closure between client and coach. The power in this phase is that the client emerges as a long-term excellent performer who can self-observe, self-correct and continuously improve on their own in order to produce sustained outcomes and remarkable results.
