A Coaching Model By Ahmad Almarzooqi, Life Coach, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
REACH – Your Transformational and Personal Relationship Coach
The coaching model is a representation that explains the philosophy or principles underpin who I am as a coach and the way I coach my clients.
What each coach brings to their coaching is totally unique; it is a combination of who is as a person, background, skills, knowledge, and experience.
Reach as per Cambridge Dictionary is to arrive at a place especially after spending a long time or a lot of effort. To make a decision, agreement, etc. about something. To get to a particular level, especially a high one, these all are part of a daily effort to grow (1).
Coaching involves a dialogue between a coach and a client supporting the client to Reach a goal, unlocking the client’s personal potential to maximize performance, partnering, and collaborating with the client to facilitate the required changes.
We live in a frenetic society and world. Success in this modern world is driven by the ‘need to achieve’ as quickly as possible (5). Coach is a process and art that take the client step by step to Reach his planned destination. Reach his life balance. Reach his desired status, etc….
The Reach Coaching Model
In coaching, we are learning about who our client is and what he wants for himself, and want to use that information to help the client dig into his resources to move forward and Reach his desired status/goal using the following process and competencies:
R-Reality
At the initial stage of the coach, the client presents his story and the coach must find the fact, values, and beliefs in the story, this will provide clarity of the source of the issue raised by the client, narrow down the objective by easy make, simple dialogue, and using powerful questions. Knowing the reality behind the issue, diagnosing the case without leading and judgment, and analyzing the present status is the foundation for a coaching session. Explore and assess the situation through a different lens from different angles to make the next step easier, client discovers the reality, not the symptom before proceeding to goal setting (establish goal and agreement).
E-Establish Goal and Agreement
Once the issue is known and the real status (present)explored. In the second phase of the coaching session, the client will define what he wants from this session (desired status). In this process, the client will narrow down the objective to a specific need (SMART), specific, measurable, achievable, resource, and time-bound, what client want? the agreement needs to be clarified to one session or the whole program in multiple sessions as needed. This is a key to coaching agreement and to making easy next step in the coaching process (awareness and action plan).
A-Awareness and Action Plan
The client at this stage is ready to examine his thoughts, to gain new awareness using the coach’s powerful questions and probing deep into hidden values, limiting beliefs, own experience, and learnings. Challenge the client to evoke awareness, give effective feedback to reframe the thinking so as to develop the client’s own action plan with accountability and commitment, and don’t label, judge or lead. Every action starts with a choice driven by client town experiences. Coaching started as a partner relationship between coach and client, followed by a structured process, and ends up with the client taking more decisive actions.
C-Connect With Empathy and Trust
To be able to reach to agreement and action plan stage, the connection with the client must be built on trust, full presence, active listing, a notice of changes, acknowledging the positive shift, unlocking his potential to maximize performance, and supporting the change.
The art of connection has many values&is the main pillar in coach session success, It’s Latin for The Art of Connection’s motto: “Connect before solving.”, the soul of the art of connection is humility. Cultivating the ability to be silent is the cornerstone of the art of connection, with oneself and with others(8), self-management for coaches means managing your own beliefs, your judgments, your opinions, and your reactions, and these are key to positive connection.
Coaching is about flowing with the client’s energy. So, it’s insight and inspiration. With just the right amount of challenge and stretch (9).
H-Honesty
Honesty as per Cambridge Dictionary is telling the truth or being able to be trusted and not likely to steal, cheat or lie(3), as per Merriam Webster’s dictionary is the quality of being fair and truthful, the quality of being honest(2). Honesty is the quality of always speaking the truth and being totally authentic, straightforward, and transparent in our words and actions, these are foundations for trust in a relationship (4)., Honesty is required from both coach and client to ensure the required result and objectives achieved. Be consistent, don’t commit beyond coach standard practice, be ethical, refer to correct expert for therapy help, avoid judging, labeling and address the breaches openly, this competency is addressed in ICF competency under (7)
- Demonstrate ethical practice.
- Cultivate trust and safety.
I start to practice the above model in my peer coaching starting from December -2021 and I get much positive feedback from peers it combines process and competencies beside suggestions to improve in the future to add branding and moto so it gives higher value to the model.
